De Grisogono Crazy Skull, A One-Of-A-Kind Halloween Watch

You don’t have to be crazy to wear the “Crazy Skull” watch from Swiss jeweler de Grisogono. The skull is a favorite design object for many designers – Alexander McQueen and Damian Hirst are just a couple of them. Often considered as a symbol of mortality, courage, non-conformity and free-thinking, however in Hamlet Shakespeare used skull as a symbol to express humor and despair.

It took de Grisogono’s creative director Fawaz Gruosi almost a year to do research and development. And 250 hours of complex jewelry work was done by master watchmakers and gem-setters, goldsmiths, diamond-cutters and polishers to get everything right. This unique creation feature a set of teeth made from white baguette-cut diamonds weighing 7.70 karats in total. An in-house built mouth mechanism that took 9 months to develop creates a bit of Halloween magic. When the lower jaw is opened, the “Crazy Skull” sticks out its tongue – set with 66 pink sapphires or rubies.

“My creative process starts with an idea running through my head. Then I make a design and start to look for the appropriate stones. In order to unleash my creativity, I never take into account commercial, financial or temporal constraints. Creativity is therefore a pure expression of passion,” said Fawaz Gruosi.

The skull itself is snow-set with 890 diamonds or rubies close to 23 karats. In all, twenty different sizes of stones are encrusted. Its nose made from a heart-cut 1.5 karat white diamond, come from a 3 karat square-cut stone. It also has a kinetic technology inspired time mechanism where spiral setting of black and white diamonds gives the impression of movement inside two magnetic eyes.

The quartz SF 10-44 caliber movement powered skull is offered in three versions – black carbonado, rubies and white diamonds. A galuchat strap with two bone-shaped, diamond or ruby studded clasps complete the watch. Limited to just 10 pieces, the Crazy Skull depending on customization could cost between $633,000 and $822,000.
